The Ministry of labour and vocational training and clothing manufacturers have refused their request for renegotiation of the new minimum wage structure in the garment industry.


Ath Thun, head of the Kampuchea Labor Federation, recently held a meeting in Meanchey area, where workers' leaders said more than 60 thousand workers promised to take part in a one week strike in next month. Art Thun,


He also said that although they had complied with the regulations, the authorities did not negotiate with them.

Therefore, they will start a week long strike in September 13th.

He also said that they were looking for fairness for workers, and the workers worked hard, but wages were low.


Government officials, labor advisory boards and industry representatives decided last month to raise the minimum wage for garment workers by 5 per month.

To $61, the new wage structure will begin in October this year.

However, the workers' leaders said that the increase should not be enough to raise to 93 dollars a month, and there should be additional allowances.


At the beginning of the month, the workers' leaders wrote to the Ministry of labour, demanding further negotiations on the minimum wage institutions.

However, the government had no response.

If the government talks with the workers' representatives, the strike will be avoided.
