American sports giant Nike and environmental protection organization Ocean Conservancy jointly signed the Arctic Shipping Corporate Pledge to call on more enterprises to avoid shipping routes through the Arctic.
The Arctic is often called the "refrigerator of the world" and plays a vital role in regulating global temperature. It is also one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change. The temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast as that in other parts of the globe. Experts worry that the Arctic ecosystem is becoming more and more fragile.
Ocean Conservancy said in a press release: "Due to climate change, the Arctic ice layer continues to decrease, which opens the possibility of freight passage for previously inaccessible Arctic routes. Although these routes can shorten the transit time, the increase in Arctic vessel traffic will bring huge risks and may have a devastating impact on the environment." It was also pointed out that navigation in Arctic waters could lead to other dangers such as accidents, stranding or oil spills. At present, the greenhouse gases caused by global shipping account for about 3% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions.
The signatory members have promised to explore more ways to reduce global shipping emissions, support the development of preventive Arctic shipping practices, and ultimately improve current and future potential Arctic and human security issues. Nike and Ocean Conservancy hope to invite more enterprises to join the commitment through this cooperation to stop shipping vessels from damaging the Arctic ecosystem.
Hilary Krane, Nike's executive vice president, chief executive officer and general counsel, said in a statement: "In Nike, everything is for athletes. We will take action to deal with climate change and move Nike towards a future of zero carbon and zero waste. We know that climate change will affect how our athletes train and compete, as well as their willingness to participate in sports. Through this commitment, we have made a clear choice - to help protect the Earth and the Arctic. "
Janis Searles Jones, CEO of Ocean Conservancy, added: "The risks of trans Arctic routes greatly outweigh the benefits it may bring, and we cannot ignore the impact of global shipping emissions on our oceans. Ocean Conservancy appreciates Nike's approach, and they have realized the real bottom line, that is, to jointly take responsibility for the health of the Arctic. We believe that this commitment will lead to stronger actions to prevent dangerous Arctic shipping and further reduce global shipping emissions. "
The original signing members of the Arctic Shipping Corporate Pledge also include Gap Inc., H&M Group, Kering Group, PVH Corp. and other fashion companies, as well as CMA CGM, Evergreen, Hapago Lloyd and Mediterranean Shipping Company and other shipping companies.
