And in 5 years, it has developed into an international boutique brand with a distinctive product line.

In the past few years, MCM has successfully established seven flagship boutiques at the best shopping locations in the world, throughout Europe, the United States and Asia, such as Berlin's Damm street, London's Sloan street, New York Plaza Hotel, and Seoul's Qing Tan hole. Last year, MCM opened fifteenth stores in Sax's Fifth Avenue, the top department store in the US, and accelerated its growth in the US market.

She was named "the global future leader in 1997" at the world economic forum held in Davos, Switzerland. In 2009, she won the business ethics award from the International Association of human values in Brussels.

Recently, a speech activity focused on leadership and retail brands jointly organized by the Chinese women's Venture Capital Association and MCM was held in No. three the Bund, Shanghai. During this period, Sung-Joo Kim accepted an exclusive interview with this newspaper.

How did you enter the fashion industry?

Kim: I entered the Blunmin Dyer department store in 1985 and have entered the fashion industry for more than 20 years. Since 1990, the Sungjoo group has founded some world-renowned brands, responsible for Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Sonia Rykiel and Marks &Spencer in Korea's franchise retail business, and has developed more than 100 boutiques in Korea.

How has the brand been developed since the Sungjoo group took over MCM in 2005? Are all products still manufactured in Germany?

Kim: today, the group manages 150 retailers in more than 40 countries in the world. In 2008, the Group sales volume was about $2 billion in 2008. Today, MCM has a global annual sales of about $1 billion. In Korea, MCM is already the top leather brand after LV, with sales amounting to US $400 million, and about 300 million US dollars in China and Japan. Now there are more than 50 factories in Germany, Italy and South Korea. More than half of the products are made in Germany and Italy, and the top factories for making MCM products in Italy are also made for top brands such as Gucci and Valentino.

As a successful female entrepreneur, how do you view your achievements?

Kim: I am very happy to prove the ability of Asian women to prove to the world. On the other hand, I am also a mother. I am proud to wear jeans of the same size as my daughter. As a female entrepreneur, it is not necessary to divestiture nature and society to women's original attributes.

You set up a foundation for the Sungjoo group and donated $1 million to the world women's summit during the world women's summit in Beijing in May this year. Can you talk about your understanding of corporate social responsibility?

The Kim:Sungjoo foundation was founded on the 20th anniversary birth of the group. It originated from the concept of charity produced by Christianity and the sense of social responsibility of "aristocratic gratitude". I hope to help create a new generation of global women leaders to enhance the society as a whole. Serving the community is one of my biggest responsibilities. I believe that success is not just accumulation of money but catalyzing the whole world. I have been an ally for more than 20 years with Irene Natividad, the chairwoman of the world women's summit. We are trying to improve the global status of women in the face of gender inequalities and the imbalance between family and work. The Sungjoo Foundation hopes to inspire women to inspire their potential through education and advocacy and institutionalized assistance to fight poverty, and strive to create a new generation of global women leaders.
