Shanghai Disneyland Will Receive 5.5 Million Visitors In 2020, Down 48% Year On Year
On April 1, Fang Shizhong, director of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of culture and tourism, revealed in his speech at the 2021 Shanghai Tourism Industry Summit Forum that in 2020, Shanghai Disneyland will receive 5.5 million tourists, a year-on-year decrease of 48% and an annual income of 46%. Even so, Shanghai Disneyland is still the world's fastest recovery of large theme park since the outbreak.
In the 2020 financial report, Disney pointed out that the epidemic has caused great losses to the company's business, many of which were closed most of the reporting period; the business that has been restored operates under strict restrictions and bears additional cost burden.
On March 3, Disney said it plans to close at least 60 stores in North America this year, equivalent to about 20% of its global stores, to focus on e-commerce. The company is also assessing the possibility of slashing its European stores, which will not be affected in Japan and China. It is reported that Disney currently operates about 300 Disney stores around the world.
For the entire fiscal year 2020, Disney's revenue was $65.388 billion, down 6% year-on-year; its net loss was as high as $2.832 billion, compared with a profit of $11.054 billion in the same period of last year. Theme park and film and television entertainment, which are closely connected with offline businesses, were obviously hurt. The former had an income of US $16.502 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 37%, and the latter of 9.636 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 13%.
In contrast, the other two businesses that focus on online are relatively stable, especially the direct consumer oriented business including Disney + and international business. The revenue of this sector was US $16.967 billion, a year-on-year increase of 81%. Media network business revenue was 28.393 billion US dollars, up 14% year on year.
